Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) supplementation, either separately or as part of a multi-vitamin, is appropriate on general principles because mild deficiencies are common, particularly in children and the elderly. This nutrient plays a major role in the biosynthesis of many proteins, hormones, and neurotransmitters. Other than improvement of deficiencies, no specific pharmacologic or therapeutic actions have been established at doses above those recommended.
